This Is No Dress Rehearsal

Describe a risk you took that you do not regret.

This is Your Life

Right now as we speak I’m probably taking one of the biggest risks I have taken in life.

Closer To Family

We were driving aimlessly about two years ago and we briefly discussed moving up to Seattle. Seattle is markedly more expensive than Southwest Washington. We discussed that as merely a pipe dream. Maybe we would get a condo or apartment but at least we would be closer to family. We would also have to find employment as my wife is a school principal. Those jobs aren’t floating around every day.

Finance 101

The Seattle market can be rather expensive. The market in the Portland Metro area can be capricious. To top it off the current regime in the United States it’s starting wars left, and right which make interest rates skyrocket.

Timing

All things have to fall in place in the correct order for this to work.

  • Find a job
  • Prep the house
  • Sell the house
  • Secure the financing
  • Buy a new house 175 miles away
  • Not kill each other as a couple. Moving is stressful.

Like I Said

Like I said to my wife, there’s no other person I’d rather go through this chaos than you. This was a risky move. Each step along the way had to happen. But it should be pointed out if I was 29 years old the risk would be a lot less. Each step along the way was more likely to succeed then fail.

Statistics 101

Let us say, you wake up tomorrow and look at the weather forecast. There is a 30% chance of rain for the first hour of the day and the same percentage for the next five distinct hours. I won’t get too deep in the statistical analysis, but those hours aren’t discreet like the steps in moving. Still there is a 60% chance of rain. So even though most steps are likely to succeed overall there’s risk involved.

Despite The Odds

But right now we are on the precipice. So far all steps have fallen into place and we can actually see the finish line.. I’ve been calling moving companies to get quotes. That’s how close we are.

Friday I’m In Love

I drove to an appointment this morning just looking around on this beautiful morning. There are so much that I love about living where I currently live. I love the people, the neighbors, their record stores, the city, and all the established routines. There’s a certain thrill in the brand new and there is a throne in the old. Moving up north allows us to be closer to family and embark on a brand new adventure.

This is a beautifully honest and grounded piece. You’ve captured the tension between risk and hope in a very real, relatable way—especially the balance between leaving something familiar and stepping into something uncertain.

The way you weave practical realities with emotional depth makes it feel authentic, not idealized. And that line about there being no one else you’d rather go through the chaos with—it quietly holds the whole story together.

I would love to hear you opinion as well

His friends observe Mark seems wired a little differently. Perhaps it’s more likely that noticing little things often missed by others is a relic of a quieter, simpler time. He has a way with words, which he refuses to let be hindered by sub-par typing skills. People have great stories to tell if you sit and listen.

A belief dear to Mark is that there is certain beauty in the world. You simply have to look for it.
