I am a computer programmer by trade, but I certainly like to tell a story. If only I could type. There is a connection there.
I’ve had moderate success writing short stories. I have had eight stories published in various magazines. That doesn’t mean I’m very good at it. Maybe I sent the right story to the right editor at the right time.
I Do This
And you should not. I start out with a general idea and I just start telling a story not knowing where it’s going to go.
I live and breathe the story and sometimes it doesn’t make any sense.
Hair Brain Idea
Or some misplaced Idiom. maybe it’s a hare brain idea.
I am currently writing a short story about a weird couple who communicate through graffiti on train cars.
The story up until now seemed like a train ride across a BARRON wilderness.Albeit an interesting one as I love train rides.
Zug
And suddenly, I know where I’m going to go with the story.
It took me 1500 words to figure that out.
Raymond Carver would argue with me that this is what we talk about when we talk about love or writing a short story.
He would say don’t do it this way or maybe he wouldn’t.
Leo Tolstoy
Truthfulness: He urged writers to never write with an eye to publication, but only when necessary to convey truth.
Writing the story to me it’s a journey itself. I don’t know exactly where it’s going and that’s where as my grandson would say.
Let’s go on an adventure
Arthur
And now I found my storytelling counterpart in life. Lily King is simply amazing. Her approach is very similar to mine. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
Discovery Process: King doesn’t outline, preferring to discover the plot along with the characters, finding that this approach allows for more natural development.
His friends observe Mark seems wired a little differently. Perhaps it’s more likely that noticing little things often missed by others is a relic of a quieter, simpler time. He has a way with words, which he refuses to let be hindered by sub-par typing skills. People have great stories to tell if you sit and listen.
A belief dear to Mark is that there is certain beauty in the world. You simply have to look for it.
I would love to hear you opinion as well
