What’s the funniest misunderstanding you’ve ever been part of?
Where is My 3.09
I lived in this cool condo complex in Williamsburg, Virginia, right out of college. We had a swimming pool and it was nice for the hot summers. I was infatuated with the lifeguard. She was very tall, had long legs and a beautiful tan. I wish I knew more about the world then. I cannot put into words how much I was infatuated with her. I don’t think I talked to her maybe two times that summer. I probably should have.
In early October, I went to a bar after a running race with my buddy Eed. Per usual, I was in a great mood after a running race I sat down and had a beer and then another. The bartender walked over to me and said, do you know who I am? I apologized and said I did not.
She said her name was Julie and she was a lifeguard at the pool I went to. Of course I muttered something stupid like “I didn’t recognize you with your clothes on.“
I wish I understood the world more at that time.
I have no idea how , but I got my act together and asked her out for a date. We dated for a little while, I still wish I knew more about the world at that time. She was a very beautiful girl yet fairly simple with her ambitions. I can’t say I had my act together than either.
We didn’t date much after that as I probably did something like lost her phone number.
In January, we got a massive snowstorm. We did the most logical thing and drove the 3 miles to the Blue Rose cafe. We drove in my friend‘s car. We called his car the bullet because it was so slow. It was very good in the snow. We got to the Blue Rose Café and Julie was working there once again.
My buddy and I sat there and had a few beers. I talked to Julie to make plans to get together again. I don’t think we did.
As we were leaving, my friend said to me, I’ll pay the bill.
it did eventually start stop snowing and spring comes early in Williamsburg, Virginia. We started going to local running races in the spring. We finished the 10 miler in Hampton, Virginia, and headed to the blue Rose Café. I had a tremendous race, finishing the 10 miler in 64 minutes. I think I even won an award that day.
My head was full of endorphins, and I wanted to reconnect with Julie. I walked in the bar and there she was working the front desk.
The first thing she said, and a loud voice was.
Where is my 309.
I was perplexed, was this code for something.
She repeated, where is my 3.09.
And then it dawned on me. My “buddy” never paid the bill when we were at the bar the previous time.
Jackass.
As an aside, the next autumn, that same jackass and two of my other friends, we got together and we wrote a book. We used to sit in Paul’s Deli and write the book every Tuesday night.

The Title of the book was “ You can’t get laid in Williamsburg.”
I certainly had the credentials.
I wish I understood the world more at that time.

I would love to hear you opinion as well
