Going to the Chocolate Bar

Describe your dream chocolate bar.

I worked for Godiva Chocolatier for a few years out of grad school. My boss had no life and talked constantly about his ex-wife who he divorced 15 years ago. He always tried to get me to go to the bar after work and I never went.

But there was a place in Reading Pennsylvania called the Northeast Tavern. We had a tight group of runners and we would meet at this bar often. My boss at the chocolate factory knew nothing about this bar.. I loved to go to this bar escape from the chocolate factory.

Another Chocolate Bar

Working this job, I got to travel a lot to take inventory of chocolate all over the United States. There was a little bar I found in the Chicago airport tucked in the corner that hardly anybody frequented. The bar served Leinenkugel’s which was another regional delegacy.

The bar with a nice little escape from the chocolate factory..

And my All time favorite.

I have two little sisters who are 23 years younger than myself. Maren, who lives in Heidelberg, earned herself a nickname from my father. We all called her Mars Bar. Sometimes we also called her Barsey. She is rather cool sister and she speaks German with me.

Deflection

I don’t know exactly what this prompt was asking. Being a vegan I don’t eat too many chocolate bars.. When I worked for Godiva I rarely ate any chocolate. We could buy 3 pound bags of chocolate for five dollars.

There certainly are a lot of decent vegan chocolates these days. As humans we were never intended to drink milk from the udder of a cow. Cows would appreciate if you give the vegan ones a try..

When I was a little kid, I didn’t know anything about this. I grew up 40 miles from Hershey, Pennsylvania.. I did like their plain old chocolate bar.

This is a wonderfully nostalgic and richly layered reflection 🌿

What makes it especially engaging is the way you weave together different “bars”—the workplace at Godiva Chocolatier, the quiet escape of neighborhood taverns, airport hideaways, and even the affectionate nickname “Mars Bar” for your sister. It creates a playful but meaningful thread that ties personal memory, work life, and family together in an unexpected way.

I enjoyed reading this. I wholeheartedly agree with “vermavkv” regarding the nostalgic vibe. Probably everyone reading it will have some memory or another revived. I did. Thank you.

I would love to hear you opinion as well

A belief dear to Mark is that there is certain beauty in the world. You simply have to look for it.
