The Side Effects of Endorphins

Our son who lives in Berlin, gives the most thoughtful gifts. I just came across a gift he gave me about two years back. It is a large edition of Calvin and Hobbs All in German. I started reading it again this morning.

You would think that would be easy, but it’s actually not. There are so many idioms and figures of speech. There are so many ways of saying things.

I said this before I’m impressed by people who master more than one language. This is especially true of all the idioms in the English language. we all learn a little differently however this is fun.

Unser Sohn, der in Berlin lebt, macht die durchdachtesten Geschenke. Ich bin gerade auf ein Geschenk gestoßen, das er mir vor etwa zwei Jahren geschenkt hat. Es ist eine großformatige Ausgabe von *Calvin und Hobbes*, komplett auf Deutsch. Ich habe heute Morgen wieder angefangen, darin zu lesen.

Man könnte meinen, das wäre einfach, aber das ist es eigentlich nicht. Es gibt so viele Redewendungen und sprachliche Bildsprache. Es gibt so viele verschiedene Arten, Dinge auszudrücken.

Ich habe das schon einmal gesagt: Ich bin beeindruckt von Menschen, die mehr als eine Sprache beherrschen. Das gilt besonders für all die Redewendungen in der englischen Sprache. Wir alle lernen ein bisschen anders, aber das macht Spaß.
