Beer Can Man

Describe a random encounter with a stranger that stuck out positively to you.

Little Things

I’m sorry it has come down to this. In a country with so many resources and so many billionaires, we have people living on the street. It is embarrassing.

I honor the hard work done by the-beer can man. He was out there this morning, with his Bike, his wagon, and a large sack of beer cans. Where we live, the cans go into the recycling. One must travel across the Columbia river into Oregon to get the deposit. I believe the deposit is a dime.

So this man goes trashcan to the trashcan collecting cans. Many times at the expense of the wrath of the resident. I personally don’t care and I love his energy and spirit. Once all the cans are collected, he must take them into Oregon and wait in line at the recycling center. The recycling center. Is a dark and dour place.

I gave him a few heavy duty bags this morning to make his trip easier.

We are moving and I’ve made at least a dozen trips to the Goodwill center. Last night, I put a few items out by the trash that they would not take. This included a sleeping bag and a pack and play.

They were gone this morning and hopefully to a good home.

This is a deeply humane and observant reflection.

What stands out most is your ability to notice dignity in places where most people only see inconvenience or waste. The way you describe “the beer can man” is especially powerful—you don’t reduce him to circumstance or judgment, but instead highlight his effort, routine, and persistence in a system that is not always kind or easy to navigate.

I would love to hear you opinion as well

His friends observe Mark seems wired a little differently. Perhaps it’s more likely that noticing little things often missed by others is a relic of a quieter, simpler time. He has a way with words, which he refuses to let be hindered by sub-par typing skills. People have great stories to tell if you sit and listen.

A belief dear to Mark is that there is certain beauty in the world. You simply have to look for it.
