Farewell

What is one thing you can’t live without?

The first thing that came to mind was a brilliant movie called the Farewell. Aspiring Chinese-American writer Billi maintains a close relationship with her Nai Nai (paternal grandmother) who lives in Changchun, China. After receiving a rejection letter for a Guggenheim Fellowship, she discovers from her parents, Haiyan and Jian, that Nai Nai has been diagnosed with terminal lung cancer, and is predicted to have only a few months left to live.

If you get a chance, this movie is delightful and displays the importance of family, hope and what matters most in life. One thing that ties the story together is the music. The soundtrack of this movie is stunning. There is a version of Harry Nielsen’s ”Without You”; that closes the movie that certainly pulls at the heartstrings.

No, I can’t forget this evening
Or your face as you were leaving
But I guess that’s just the way the story goes
You always smile, but in your eyes, your sorrow shows
Yes, it shows

No, I can’t forget tomorrow
When I think of all my sorrow
When I had you there, but then I let you go
And now it’s only fair that I should let you know

Full Circle

We have a friend whose time on this earth is limited. She can’t live without her medication fighting an unfair brain cancer. I exchanged birthday wishes with her this week and she reiterated how essential this birthday is to her.

And one must listen. She wants to see one last eclipse with us, and live a year of life as normally as possible. She also misses her work which is quizzical to me but that’s not the point. It’s important to her.

I would love to hear you opinion as well

I’m Mark

His friends observe Mark seems wired a little differently. Perhaps it’s more likely that noticing little things often missed by others is a relic of a quieter, simpler time. He has a way with words, which he refuses to let be hindered by sub-par typing skills. People have great stories to tell if you sit and listen.

A belief dear to Mark is that there is certain beauty in the world. You simply have to look for it.
