What’s the best local dish you’ve ever eaten while traveling?

To use the term best is misleading. Dining is not only the taste, aroma and flavors, it is also the company, the atmosphere and sometimes just how hungry we are.

But for now I’m going to take a detour somewhere in the Heart of Wyoming near the border of South Dakota. We were there to spread my mother-in-law‘s ashes as she was born in Wyoming. It was just the six of us and the ceremony was beautiful as my mother-in-law went into the Mystic.

It was a moving experience as a gentle breeze blew off the prairie. There is a certain beauty to southern Wyoming at sunset. There is nothing else to do.

We all went out to eat afterwards and everybody was happy to have burgers (bison) and fries. Me being vegan in Wyoming was a challenge. The owner of the restaurant assured me he could make a delicious vegan meal for me.

He did make a meal. It was a bowl of mushrooms, presumably from a can. The mushrooms were sautéed in a lot of oil. The mushrooms were presented in a bowl of grease.

Oh Wyoming thank you for serving me the worst meal I can recall. Don’t get me wrong. It was still a pretty cool evening as we were here to bury my mother-in-law‘s ashes, not to eat gourmet food from Wyoming.

Nobody comes to Wyoming for that reason.

I know I didn’t answer the question as who can pinpoint the best meal. That’s rather difficult. But I can certainly pinpoint the worst.

His friends observe Mark seems wired a little differently. Perhaps it’s more likely that noticing little things often missed by others is a relic of a quieter, simpler time. He has a way with words, which he refuses to let be hindered by sub-par typing skills. People have great stories to tell if you sit and listen.

A belief dear to Mark is that there is certain beauty in the world. You simply have to look for it.
