It has been rather hot and humid here in Mainz. There is no air conditioning and limited cooling at night.

After dinner today a breeze picked up and the sky darkened unexpectedly. I could hear thunder off in the distance and we opened the windows to allow the breeze to take over.

We were eating dinner and Yafa (3 year old grand daughter) said

Hey it’s raining

Then we heard large thunderclaps and suddenly Yafa wanted to go play in the rain. Which we did.

It wasn’t raining all that much when we first went outside. She ran in the puddles and was on top of her game. And then the rain picked up with ferocity . We found shelter under the umbrellas (Regenschirm) at the Vietnamese restaurant across the way. And then the rain would let up and we would dash to the street that overlooks the city. The views there are are tremendous.

Then the rain would force us back under the umbrella. I was half speaking German and half speaking English with her.

She painted this earlier

A family at the restaurant must’ve heard me say the word rainbow. They pointed to the east and there in the sky was a brillant segment of a huge rainbow almost touching the dome of Gautur.

I said to Yafa let’s go chasing rainbows. And that’s what we did for the next half hour amongst scattered rain..

The unexpected moment left me without a camera. I will always have memories of running around upper Mainz (Gaitor) chasing rainbows with my granddaughter..

What a beautiful reminder that life’s most precious moments are often the ones we never plan. Your story transported me to the rain-soaked streets of Mainz, where a summer shower became an unforgettable adventure. I could almost picture little Yafa splashing through puddles, excitedly chasing the rainbow with her grandparent by her side.

I especially loved your closing thought. Sometimes, the best memories are the ones we never capture with a camera because they are etched forever in our hearts. The image of a brilliant rainbow stretching toward the cathedral while you both ran through the rain is simply magical.

I would love to hear you opinion as well
