I Need a Diaper

Are you a lifelong learner?

Yesterday I was out and about with the three year old and for the life of me I could not remember the German word for Diaper.

I felt like my brain was at capacity. Did I have to unlearn something to create storage for this new word. of course the brain doesn’t work that way.

No, learning new things does not overwrite or push out older information. The brain’s long-term memory capacity is virtually unlimited, estimated to hold roughly 2.5 petabytes of data (enough to record 300 years of continuous video).

Will you ever learn?

Have you ever been asked this?

I used to love the term, lifelong learner, but the term is as self evident as the expression I was born at a very early age.

Which brings us back to yesterday. We visited my ex mother in law in Ingelheim. I am not big into the German traditional afternoon of snack of cake and cookies. I had not seen my ex mother in law since right after the Berlin Wall fell. I didn’t speak German well back then and that pissed her off at the time. But yesterday we sat and conversed in German. Not perfectly, but still it was breezy and fun. I enjoyed the afternoon.

We rarely drive in Germany. Yesterday we rented a car with a manual transmission. I taught my daughter to drive stick many years ago and she struggled with it. Yesterday she mastered the Autobahn without a hitch.

Imagine if we were not lifelong learners. Or maybe that’s why they rarely sell manual transmissions in the States.

Ich brauche eigentlich eine Windel.

Oh yeah I needed a diaper. I have not forgotten how to change one of these.

I love afternoon tea and cookies, wherever practiced, but is the German version different?

I don’t know. I am simply never in the mood mid afternoon and cakes are not vegan on most occasions. Specially in your ex mother in laws house, and her diaspora. I had watermelon.

🙂 Okay all fair points. It’s not every day such a moment like that arrives.

I would love to hear you opinion as well

His friends observe Mark seems wired a little differently. Perhaps it’s more likely that noticing little things often missed by others is a relic of a quieter, simpler time. He has a way with words, which he refuses to let be hindered by sub-par typing skills. People have great stories to tell if you sit and listen.

A belief dear to Mark is that there is certain beauty in the world. You simply have to look for it.
