Max always produces innovative ideas even when those ideas do not sound good at the time. It was my first day in Berlin in a long time and I had a slight case of jet lag. I did not know that at the time. Max asked me if I wanted to ride our bikes to the old airport in Berlin. The old airport in Berlin is unique in its own right. This area was repurposed as a public park (Tempelhofer field) after a 2014 public referendum.

Naturally, I agreed without hesitation. Bikes are parked everywhere in Berlin, and I found my bike parked along the canal in Neukölln. It is a densely populated hip neighborhood that borders with Kreuzberg. We rode the bike toward the old airport about eight kilometers away. The tires on my bike were low on air pressure and the brakes did not work well on Maxs bike. We made it there despite the difficulty.

One would think meeting a group of skateboarding youngsters in a park would be challenging. It was not. The old airfield has exciting views and terrific sunsets. Max’s Friends are charming and know when to speak English and when to speak German with me. It was perfect for my first day. The evening culture in Berlin is loose and free. People carry beers everywhere and cigarette smoking is more prevalent than the United States. Then again, nobody has a gun. September evenings in Berlin are special. I enjoy them. The old airfield has activities for everybody. The skateboarders skate. There are running trails that stretch for miles and playgrounds for kids. It is simply a delightful atmosphere and a fantastic way to spend an evening. This is especially true when you have your son proudly showing what goes into a typical evening in Berlin.

Max hat immer innovative Ideen, auch wenn diese Ideen zunächst nicht gut klingen. Es war mein erster Tag in Berlin seit langer Zeit und ich litt leicht unter Jetlag. Das war mir damals nicht bewusst. Max fragte mich, ob ich mit ihm mit dem Fahrrad zum alten Flughafen in Berlin fahren wolle. Der alte Flughafen in Berlin ist einzigartig. Nach einer Volksabstimmung im Jahr 2014 wurde dieses Gebiet zu einem öffentlichen Park (Tempelhofer Feld) umfunktioniert. 

Natürlich stimmte ich ohne zu zögern zu. In Berlin stehen überall Fahrräder, und ich fand mein Fahrrad am Kanal in Neukölln. Es ist ein dicht besiedeltes, hippes Viertel, das an Kreuzberg grenzt. Wir fuhren mit dem Fahrrad zum etwa acht Kilometer entfernten alten Flughafen. Die Reifen meines Fahrrads hatten zu wenig Luftdruck und die Bremsen von Max’ Fahrrad funktionierten nicht richtig. Trotz der Schwierigkeiten schafften wir es dorthin. 

Man könnte meinen, dass es schwierig wäre, eine Gruppe von Skateboard fahrenden Jugendlichen in einem Park zu treffen. Das war es aber nicht. Der alte Flugplatz bietet eine aufregende Aussicht und wunderschöne Sonnenuntergänge. Max’ Freunde sind charmant und wissen, wann sie mit mir Englisch und wann sie Deutsch sprechen müssen. Es war perfekt für meinen ersten Tag. Die Abendkultur in Berlin ist locker und frei. Die Leute tragen überall Bier mit sich herum und es wird mehr geraucht als in den Vereinigten Staaten. Andererseits hat niemand eine Waffe. Die Septemberabende in Berlin sind etwas Besonderes. Ich genieße sie. Der alte Flugplatz bietet Aktivitäten für jedermann. Die Skateboarder skaten. Es gibt kilometerlange Laufstrecken und Spielplätze für Kinder. Es ist einfach eine herrliche Atmosphäre und eine fantastische Art, einen Abend zu verbringen. Das gilt besonders, wenn Ihr Sohn Ihnen stolz zeigt, wie ein typischer Abend in Berlin aussieht.

Note these are small sketches of Berlin and possibly other places in Germany. The hope is to capture the mood of the evening with an addendum in German. I will master that language one day.
