Not So Good Old Days

Reading Kristin Hannah’s The Four Winds. So far it is not a pleasant read yet I find it to be an essential read. The setting is the Dustbowl in Northern Texas. As one reads one can almost harken back to Steinbeck’s Grapes of Wrath. the differences are plenty, yet this is written through the eyes of a woman.

Here are some quick observations

Woman did not have much of a say in society. If a woman gets pregnant it is her fault. She is expected to marry the man and bear the brunt of the consequences for years to come.

Climate change was a major concern back then. The farmer,of course, bears some responsibility.

God oh mighty, old time religion is expected to solve most problems or at the very least it is the foundation of the decision making process.

The good old days are something many wish to escape from except for one subtle axiom.

The woman in this story were the rock solid foundation of the family and society. Now it is time for them to lead.
