No Picnic In The Park

This story was published today in After/Thought Literary. it is a story that is dear to me. It takes place on a picnic bench two blocks from my daughter’s house during wildfire season.

Wildfire smoke certainly changed the dynamics of our daughter’s wedding. I thought about her often as I worked this story.

But the story has nothing to do with the wedding. It has more to do with the angst in the world.

Be kind to each other

This feels deeply personal and quietly powerful 🌿

There’s something very moving about how a real moment—sitting on a simple picnic bench during wildfire season—has been transformed into a story that speaks to something much larger. The contrast between a time meant for celebration and the underlying tension of the world adds a subtle emotional depth.

I especially appreciate your closing thought—“Be kind to each other.” Simple, yet profoundly needed.

A heartfelt and meaningful piece 💫

I would love to hear you opinion as well

His friends observe Mark seems wired a little differently. Perhaps it’s more likely that noticing little things often missed by others is a relic of a quieter, simpler time. He has a way with words, which he refuses to let be hindered by sub-par typing skills. People have great stories to tell if you sit and listen.

A belief dear to Mark is that there is certain beauty in the world. You simply have to look for it.
