Are my favories. My son and I eschewed going out on a damp slushy Berlin evening. We rather like art house movies and we stayed in and watched this movie last night. Max has a projector system in their flat. It was a fun way to see a movie.

Drowning by Numbers” is a 1988 British-Dutch crime comedy-drama directed by Peter Greenaway, focusing on three generations of women who conspire to drown their husbands.

Plot Summary

The film revolves around three women, all named Cissie Colpitts, who are connected by their shared act of murder. The characters include a grandmother (played by Joan Plowright), her daughter (Juliet Stevenson), and her granddaughter (Joely Richardson). Each woman drowns her husband in various settings—one in a bath, another in the sea, and the last in a pool. The local coroner, Henry Madgett (Bernard Hill), is drawn into their schemes as he helps cover up the crimes, believing it will lead to personal gains.

There are some initial sex scenes. It mut be fun for our kids sitting through sex scenes with their parent. He initiall offered a new movie. Naturally my response was carry on.

I think the movie rather brilliant. There were some scenes we had to take in slowly as they were surreal and bordering on brilliant. I had to wonder where they come up with that. As a writer, I give a knowing tip of the cap. I love art house movies.

I watched three German movies yesterday on the plane. I rarely watch blockbusters.

Ganzler halber Bruder , Zikaden and Amrum. They were in German with subtitles. Amrum was the least entertaining and yet telling. It told a story of some Germans who were despondent about the death of The Fuhrer. It a dirty stinking state of mind and a bit futuristic without intending to be,

Editor Note – I am in Berlin and did not bring my Tablet. It gets expensive to connect devices. I am using my laptop that has a funky letter S. My granddaughter destroyed that key on my last visit.

So if a letter S comes missing, that is why.

What a lovely, intimate way to spend an evening—choosing warmth, curiosity, and shared taste over a damp Berlin night. There’s something special about watching an art-house film together, especially on a projector at home; it turns the viewing into a small event, almost a ritual.

Your appreciation for Drowning by Numbers really comes through. Greenaway’s surreal, rule-bending imagination can feel puzzling and brilliant at the same time, and your “knowing tip of the cap” as a writer feels exactly right. Those moments that make you pause and wonder how did they even think of this? are often the ones that linger the longest.

I would love to hear you opinion as well
