Northern Exposure Sketch

This is a weird thing to paint on a Sunday morning, but I’m kind of random that way. Maurice and Adam were polar opposites on this show and often came to loggerheads. Is that even a word.

Loggerheads

In the TV series Northern Exposure, Adam and Maurice Minnifield have a complex, antagonistic relationship characterized by mutual antagonism, headstrong personalities, and a series of business dealings that always seem to fall apart. There is no familial relationship; their interactions stem from their clashing personalities and occasional need for each other’s professional skills. The way the world should work.

This is a wonderfully quirky and thoughtful reflection, and that Sunday-morning randomness works completely in its favor. There’s something charming about how a simple act of painting opens into a meditation on opposites, friction, and unlikely coexistence.

Your reference to Northern Exposure is especially apt. Adam and Maurice were indeed polar opposites—ideology, temperament, worldview—yet their constant clashes felt strangely necessary. You capture that tension beautifully: not rooted in family ties, but in personality, principle, and reluctant interdependence. And yes, loggerheads is absolutely a word—and a perfect one here.

I would love to hear you opinion as well

His friends observe Mark seems wired a little differently. Perhaps it’s more likely that noticing little things often missed by others is a relic of a quieter, simpler time. He has a way with words, which he refuses to let be hindered by sub-par typing skills. People have great stories to tell if you sit and listen.

A belief dear to Mark is that there is certain beauty in the world. You simply have to look for it.
