Lebensmittel

List your top 5 grocery store items.

Before listing the top five grocery store items, one must list the most frequent grocery stores as each has their own uniqueness.

Unless we’re traveling, we shop at these three or four stores

  1. Winco – they have the best prices and generally everything we need
  2. New Seasons – this is generally for higher-end items or specialty items almost always higher in price.
  3. Trader Joe’s – I enjoy shopping at Trader Joe’s. Their prices are pretty good however the merchandise tends to have too much packaging.
  4. Sketchy Safeway – it is the closest to our house and generally used for things I forgot or need in a hurry. It’s a short little bike ride away.

Being retired I almost do all our grocery shopping. Here are our five staples.

Garbanzo Beans – very versatile and I have many recipes for different items using garbanzo beans.

Tomatoes – in the winter time I do buy canned tomatoes, and they are in many recipes. This pattern changes in late summer.

Fresh Fruits and Vegetables This makes up half my grocery list. I’m a rather good cook and do a pretty good job of using all the ingredients.

Rice Noodles – I like having these around to make Pad Thai and various soups.

Condiments and Essentials

I love Crispy chili’s and get a jar on most weeks. I keep on top of Tamari, Vegetable bullion, vegan butter, olive oil etc.

Tracking

We use an app called Listmaker to make lists for groceries. It’s a very simple app. We also use it to track meal ideas. we recently started making our own Tofurkey. I try out a new recipe about once a week.

In case you are wondering

Lebensmittel it’s one of my favorite German words. I love the way it flows off your tongue. It simply means food

This was such a warm, grounded, and genuinely enjoyable read. I love how you didn’t just list items, but painted a picture of how and why you shop—each store has its own personality, and “Sketchy Safeway” made me smile instantly.

Your staples reflect a thoughtful, creative relationship with food: practical, seasonal, and clearly rooted in experience and care. The way cooking, planning, and even experimenting (homemade Tofurkey!) are woven into daily life feels both intentional and joyful. It’s not just about groceries—it’s about nourishment, curiosity, and rhythm.

His friends observe Mark seems wired a little differently. Perhaps it’s more likely that noticing little things often missed by others is a relic of a quieter, simpler time. He has a way with words, which he refuses to let be hindered by sub-par typing skills. People have great stories to tell if you sit and listen.

A belief dear to Mark is that there is certain beauty in the world. You simply have to look for it.
