Here We Sit

Is your life today what you pictured a year ago?

We had another atmospheric river last night, and we have no power this morning. It’s cold, It’s dark and quiet.

The quiet it’s kind of beautiful.

Suddenly Retired

About six months ago, I was told my job was ending. I had planned to work another year or two. But life inexorably marches on.

Then

We decided we wanted to be closer to our family. My wife still works as a principal and we’re looking to move to Seattle. I think it’s very likely to happen. Life marches inexorably on.

Not the Center of The Universe

That I am not. Living in United States, I worry about the future for those less fortunate than myself especially people of color and marginalized segments of the population. I did not envision this train wreck of a regime we have in power.

Despite all that, I pretty much envisioned where I’m at right now. Here I am, sitting on the sofa with the cat on my lap with no heat and no power. I’m pretty lucky.

This is a quietly powerful reflection. The way you capture uncertainty, change, and gratitude in such simple moments—the cold, the darkness, the cat on your lap—feels deeply honest and human. There’s a calm wisdom in acknowledging that life moves on whether we plan for it or not, while still holding space for concern, empathy, and perspective. Your closing thought, finding luck and grace even amid disruption, lingers beautifully. It’s a reminder that meaning often lives in the quiet, unremarkable moments we learn to notice.

Pretty lucky, yes. 🙂 I worry too, and take comfort in having company in that, as much as I wish we could all be let off the hook.

I would love to hear you opinion as well

His friends observe Mark seems wired a little differently. Perhaps it’s more likely that noticing little things often missed by others is a relic of a quieter, simpler time. He has a way with words, which he refuses to let be hindered by sub-par typing skills. People have great stories to tell if you sit and listen.

A belief dear to Mark is that there is certain beauty in the world. You simply have to look for it.
