I’ve heard this story before, but still it is such a bittersweet love story of what two people are.
My mother loved jewelry and especially expensive jewelry. I could never understand it, and I didn’t know it at the time still, it was her language of love.
She told my stepfather, don’t ever buy me candy for Valentine’s Day for my birthday because the kids will just eat it. I didn’t fact check this part of the story because I was never a candy person. Then again, why let the truth get in the way of a good story.
Come Valentine’s Day, he bought her an expensive and beautiful ring. Couples have their own language of love, and I think drama was part of their language. He decided to put that ring behind a piece of candy in a Valentine assortment.
When he told me the story, I almost had to cringe. If there was a soundtrack to this story, it would be Sade‘s “Smooth Operator “.
He presented the candies to her and she blew a gasket. Predictably she said I told you not to get me candy. I cannot confirm or deny that she threw anything at him. There was another one of their languages of love.
My mother passed away many years ago. And we stay close to my stepdad. He just gave that ring to my wife.
She would’ve eaten the chocolate.
