What skill would you like to learn?

I was on the waterfront with our grandson the other day and I just realized I have no skill set on how to use a Hulu Hoop.

Writing

Early this morning, I would’ve answered my creative writing. I have had poems and artwork published recently, but it’s been 10 months since I had a short story published.

Today I was informed that my short story ‘ Cowboy in Toronto‘ will be published in the upcoming edition of Squid magazine.

This is the opening paragraph

On most every flight that is currently flying overhead there is statistically going to be one man in a cowboy hat. Statistics are like a bikini as what they hide is just as important as what they reveal. The same can be said for ill structured research looking for the result you already want to know. We see it in industry all the time.

So my skill set that I want to hone would have to be gratitude and certainty Hula Hooping.

What a delightful and thoughtful reflection!

I love how you wove together something playful like hula hooping with something as profound as gratitude and writing. It shows a beautiful balance between lighthearted curiosity and creative depth. Your opening paragraph from Cowboy in Toronto is sharp, witty, and immediately engaging—it’s no wonder Squid Magazine wanted it. The comparison of statistics to a bikini is such a clever line, setting the tone for a story that promises both insight and originality.

Congrats on the magazine acceptance, Mark!

P.S. Even as a kid I got a stitch in my side every time I tried hula-hooping.

Thank you very much. I was in a writing funk. The goal is not necessarily publication, but it feels good to get published.

The hula hooping was inspired by my grandson who wanted one for his birthday. Could be a good core workout

I would love to hear you opinion as well

I’m Mark

His friends observe Mark seems wired a little differently. Perhaps it’s more likely that noticing little things often missed by others is a relic of a quieter, simpler time. He has a way with words, which he refuses to let be hindered by sub-par typing skills. People have great stories to tell if you sit and listen.

A belief dear to Mark is that there is certain beauty in the world. You simply have to look for it.
