The Side Effects of Endorphins

Joan Benoit Samuelson is an American Olympic marathon champion and track and field athlete. In 1984, she became the first woman to win Olympic gold in the marathon, finishing in 2:24:52. Benoit qualified for the games just 17 days after arthroscopic surgery on her knee. Her victory helped usher in a more modern view of women’s athletic ability and propelled the sport forward.

Olympic Marathon

One of my favorite all-time sporting events was when she won the Olympic marathon in Los Angeles. I believe it’s at the 2 mile mark where she ran out to 200 m lead and never relinquished it for the next two hours. Just qualifying what’s tough as she was injured only weeks before.

Bar Harbor

I had the pleasure of running with her and Bar Harbor, Maine. I was running with the baby jogger and so was she. It was fun and we had a good time running.

Today

And of course, I might mention my wife who is out doing a half marathon this morning. I had to stay home today and pack for a trip to Germany . We are all athletes and it’s a game against ourselves.
