I had to take a taxi ride home from the auto dealership this morning. My taxi driver was an 84 year-old man who was definitely high on religion and spiritual awakening. I personally don’t have any problem with that and I’m glad that today is the best day of his life. I’m not sure I needed to know that.

At Peace

He told me how he is now at peace. He told me the story about trying to save his first marriage and going to church to impress the woman who wanted to divorce him. He said it was fake, but still God spoke to him that day, and he wept in the aisles.

Of course I had questions

  1. The first thing I asked him is whether there is more than one God. His answer to me was quizzical and a little bit disturbing. He told me there was only one God and that is the God who spoke to him. He said there is no other God.
  2. The second thing I asked him was why churches disdain from helping the poor. His answer was noncommittal and he told me that is the role of the church. I told him that is how it should work. I’m good with that, but from my observations that’s not how churches work anymore.
  3. I also told him that it’s cool that he has inner peace. I told him I struggle with the world we are giving to our children. His answer to me was that he lives for today and he’s going to concentrate on today. of course there’s a certain merit to that but also a large paradoxical problem. The implications there is that we only think about ourselves.

I generally enjoy taxi rides. I initially got in the wrong cab and that cab driver seemed cool.. I’m not saying this one was not cool, but I didn’t really need the religious discussion this morning. Or maybe I did as he’s picking me up this afternoon to go back to the dealership.

Draw your own conclusions

My wife and I budgeted in $1000 for this repair. The dealership called and the invoice was $56. for those who know me, there’s not going be a come to Jesus this moment in a Toyota dealership. But I know the windshield wipers didn’t work on that car yesterday..

High on religion is apt. Have been there and it’s exhausting.

I would love to hear you opinion as well

His friends observe Mark seems wired a little differently. Perhaps it’s more likely that noticing little things often missed by others is a relic of a quieter, simpler time. He has a way with words, which he refuses to let be hindered by sub-par typing skills. People have great stories to tell if you sit and listen.

A belief dear to Mark is that there is certain beauty in the world. You simply have to look for it.
