What’s the most fun way to exercise?

I love running for the solitude and the chance to observe the world around you. I like all forms of exercise. As we get older, we realize, if it doesn’t hurt it is completely worth doing.

I run with a group called the Hash House Harriers. We run, we drink beer, we tell stories and visit every nook and cranny in the towns we have lived. Everywhere you go there is a hash running group and they will acclimate you to the town where you live. I have lifelong friends from this group. We are heading to Sedona to meet friends I met in DC many years ago. We remain close.

Which leads me to hiking. I used to do ultra runs of long distances in remote places. These runs were extremely long. These days hiking serves the same purpose. It is not only the most fun, but it is good for the soul.

I have played most all organized sports. Currently I am in a Raquetball league. With any sport you may not love every minute. There are struggles and times you think you just want to be done.

In the end the Side Effects of Endorphins is the new high. It is an unbelievable feeling of energy, clarity and insight. It is not why I exercise, rather why I have made it part of my lifelong journey.

Being in nature is part of the equation. I enjoy getting out on the bike and even kayaking. The only drawback is you need to know how to fix them when they break. My triathlon career ended after taking 40 minutes to fix a flat tire during a race.

So I prefer to keep it simple.

This was us, finishing a run across Maryland for breast cancer.

His friends observe Mark seems wired a little differently. Perhaps it’s more likely that noticing little things often missed by others is a relic of a quieter, simpler time. He has a way with words, which he refuses to let be hindered by sub-par typing skills. People have great stories to tell if you sit and listen.

A belief dear to Mark is that there is certain beauty in the world. You simply have to look for it.
