I was talking to our son in Berlin today. He is usually really fun to talk to. And today was no different. He veered off on a sudden tangent mid communication.

“Dad it’s probably too late to tell you but there is a band I like playing in Portland tonight. They are called The Microphones. You would really like them. “

And we veer back into the original conversation about his partner getting needed paper work from Chile.

We hang up and I get a text telling me the concert is in two weeks.

So I go back to work and put on some of their music. Yes he is right, they are very good.

So I decided to look up the venue where they were to play. I love impromptu concerts.

It’s in Portland, Maine not Oregon. Despite less than perfect communication he introduced me to a cool band. which may have been his original intention anyways.

I’m listening to them right now, but TBH was drawn in as much by Spotify’s artist bio, which featured sentences like this:
“Born and raised in Anacortes, Washington, Elverum started playing music at a young age, taking up the tuba and drums as a child and starting his first band, Nubert Circus, when he was 14.”

Who but an evil music genius takes up tuba and drums?? Those Nubert circus shows in Anacortes must have been wild!

Also, I recommend listening with headphones to appreciate just how diabolically disconnected the instruments often are.

I remember being similarly elated and then deflated when I read that the Felice Brothers were coming to Portland.

And maybe someday they will, but I will probably see the listing and say to myself, “Huh, I didn’t know there was a Crystal Ballroom in Portland, Maine.”

I would love to hear you opinion as well

His friends observe Mark seems wired a little differently. Perhaps it’s more likely that noticing little things often missed by others is a relic of a quieter, simpler time. He has a way with words, which he refuses to let be hindered by sub-par typing skills. People have great stories to tell if you sit and listen.

A belief dear to Mark is that there is certain beauty in the world. You simply have to look for it.
