No this is not about obnoxious entitled people on airplanes or maybe it is.

Yes, birds, particularly waxwings, can become intoxicated after consuming fermented fruit, leading to “drunken bird syndrome” where they lose coordination and may crash into objects. This is fairly similar to this guy who sat next to me in seat 2E on a flight to Heathrow.

Here’s a more detailed explanation:

  • Fermentation and Intoxication:When fruit freezes and thaws, the sugars in the fruit can ferment, producing alcohol. Birds like waxwings, cedar waxwings, and Bohemian waxwings, which rely on berries for food, can become intoxicated by consuming this fermented fruit. In the case of the airplane it some pathetic guy not knowing how to use his leisure.
  • Symptoms of Intoxication:Drunken birds exhibit symptoms similar to the guy on the airplane, including loss of coordination, difficulty flying, and disorientation. They may crash into windows, buildings, or other objects.
  • Risk Factors:Buildings and hard surfaces, ornamental berry trees, and freezing temperatures, which cause berries to convert starches into sugars, are risk factors for drunk birds. Beware of flatulence and symphonic snoring.
  • Recovery:Most birds typically recover after a few hours, but some may be more vulnerable, especially young birds. Frequent flyers seem to never learn.
  • What to do if you see a drunk bird:If you see a disoriented bird that looks like it might not make it home safely, you can try to pick it up gently with a towel and place it in a well-ventilated box in a dark, quiet place. Once the bird begins moving around again, you can open the box and let it fly away if it can.If it doesn’t recover within a few hours, call your local Wildlife Rehabilitation Center for further instructions.
  • At the very least, take away the entitled man’s frozen berries. There are berries in the airport.

I would love to hear you opinion as well
