This book rather hit home for me. I am vegan mostly for animal rights issues and it does sadden me when I see the abuses that happen in society. Each life is unique, singular and precious.
So I kind of have a kindred adoration of the main character in this book.
“Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead” is a novel by Olga Tokarczuk that blends elements of mystery, philosophy, and dark humor. The story is narrated by Janina Duszejko, an eccentric woman living in a remote Polish village. She is a retired engineer and passionate advocate for animal rights, who believes in the rights of all living creatures.
As the story unfolds, several local men are found dead under mysterious circumstances, leading Janina to become embroiled in the investigation. She suspects that the deaths are linked to her beliefs about animals, linking them to a sort of cosmic revenge for hunting and mistreatment of wildlife. Throughout the novel, themes of astrology, nature, and the connection between humans and animals are explored.
The narrative also deals with Janina’s reflections on life, death, and the societal norms that shape human behavior. The book poignantly addresses issues of loneliness, societal alienation, and the often-overlooked wisdom found in the natural world.
Overall, it’s a thought-provoking work that invites readers to consider deeper questions about morality, justice, and the human condition, all while weaving an engaging mystery.
