We spent the day with The CSI Unit in Las Vegas and damn we are glad we did. My little sister is a rock star and invited us along to watch her work for the day. It was a rather fascinating day.
Transparency
First off, that the department is pretty damn transparent allowing citizens to watch them work. I am no ordinary citizen as I walk around with a notebook and a pen and ask plenty of questions. My wife asks even more questions sans the notebook.
Accountability
I was pleasantly surprised by the accountability. There were checks and balances including a Citizens Advisory Board and auditing from outside the system. Every piece entered into an investigation was inventoried and accounted for. Each weapon during an investigation went through a special protocol and were accounted for.
Guns
I never touched a gun in my life and they terrify me. A large percentage of what CSI investigates involves either guns , drugs or alcohol right out of a Warren Zevon song. Police generally want a system of gun control, surprisingly it is not unanimous.
Gore
It’s is ugly in one shift we had a killing of a street worker, a stray bullet in a random apartment and a police shot in a melee. We were allowed to see old police files. there are some ugly crimes scenes out there. There was a guy who boiled away in a hot tub for two weeks, brains on the highways and hypodermic needles filled with mysterious brown fluids.
People
We met people who cared deeply about their jobs and paid close attention to every detail. Still they are everyday people who have babies at home, hobbies on the side as well and they order pizza for lunch. They are normal people like us all with supernatural powers.
